There are two types of gardeners: those that love the excitement of growing plants from seed and those that are secretly afraid of growing from seed. Believe me, at Natureworks we work with “newbies”, complete beginners and turn them on to the ancient ritual and unbridled joy of seed sowing and we offer bizarre, rare seed selections for those who have been doing this for a while.
There are two ways to approach this. The first way is to start seedlings indoors, ahead of planting season. By starting your own seeds you can grow exactly what you want. Yes, we have ourIncredible Edible program we we contract with organic growers to grow our seedling for us and you can order them already started if you wish. BUT, the choices are so much greater if you grow your own.
The second approach is to directly sow seed in the ground at the appropriate time in the spring. This is a great way to get started. When I select the seeds we will be selling at Natureworks each year, I use my 30+ years of experience to offer seeds that I think you will be successful with. For beginners, try nasturtiums, cosmos, beans, sunflowers, peas, and radishes. Some you sow in April, others in May or June. The best part of all, is that many annual flowers and herbs will reseed themselves year after year once you have them established. Examples are borage, nasturtiums, and Cleome (spider flower). Who doesn’t want free plants?!
