What's Brewing at Natureworks this Week...

Glowing Ember Mum

'Glowing Ember' mums are just opening this week! One giant plant will turn your home into Halloween heaven. Totally hardy to Zone 4, plant it in the ground and you can pick armloads of fresh flowers next year at this time! This is an example of Halloween Horror-culture at it's finest!

Hi everyone,
Halloween is just around the corner and it's time to jazz up your home for this fun time of year. I dug into my box of tricks and have started hanging skeletons and placing pumpkin candle holders everywhere. I have very few trick-or-treaters but that doesn't stop me from getting into the spirit and making my house look inviting and a wee bit scary. We have the biggest and best mums just starting to bloom that you will see anywhere AND they are perennial. We also have ornamental grasses, colorful foliage plants, pumpkins, gourds, and other unusual fall decor to help you in your decorating. Did I mention drip-less candles?
You must check out the new arrivals this week. We have tons of really interesting succulents in teeny tiny pots, perfect for container gardens and terrariums.

Terrarium

THE AMARYLLIS BULBS ARE HERE including 'Red Pearl' which is really a deep, dark maroon. Start your amaryllis bulbs NOW if you want them to be rooted and budding up for the holiday season. Remember, plant them in tight pots and keep them warm while they are rooting. Water only when dry until you see the buds emerging. We have lots of beautiful containers you can use for all sorts of bulb forcing projects whether it be in pots with soil, in rocks, or in forcing jars.

  Mini Succulents

We are getting really low on our organic hard neck seed garlic; you should be thinking about planting garlic very soon. My raised bed that I fill with over 150 cloves of various kinds is cleaned out, amended, and ready to go. I pop in the cloves and cover it with hay mulch for the winter. You can also get moving on planting bulbs in earnest right now as the gardens are starting to thin out in the foliage department due to the last couple of killing frosts.

Boxes of Bulbs

I have hauled tons of debris to the compost pile and my stockpile of flower bulbs in the garage is growing every day. Have you come in and selected yours yet? With over 40 kinds of daffodils, Leucojum, snowdrops, and Alliums, you don't have to worry if you have deer, we still have lots and lots of bulbs that you can grow. Speaking of deer, have you noticed that they are really brazen and super-hungry lately? I just had a customer call and tell me they ate her monkshood which is poisonous to them. They ate the buds off of my 'Chuckles' rose that lives in my courtyard- a first for me. They stripped my elderberry bare. I am now seriously using deer repellents on schedule according to our Deer Blast program. You can sign up on our website and we will remind you when it is time to use repellants. This really works.
Our last Saturday morning garden walk of the season is this Saturday morning from 9:30-10:30. A horror-culturist's most pressing questions will be answered such as:
  • Do I cut down my ornamental grasses in the fall?
  • How far back should I cut my butterfly bushes at this time of year?
  • Why would I bother to hill up my roses? What is hilling up anyway? Which roses need it? What do I use to do it?
  • What do you use WiltPruf for and at what temperatures do I use it?
  • How do I know if a plant should be cut down or left up?
  • Herbaceous? What does that mean and why should I care?
  • Should I remove all the leaves from my garden or leave them? (Hint: they're called leaves)
  • Are there any perennials that could be hurt if I cut them down in the fall instead of the spring?
  • Can I still plant (YES!!!) and are there precautions I should take?
  • What is winter mulching?
  • Can I top dress my gardens with compost this fall to save time in the spring?
  • What should I do with foliage that is diseased?
Natureworks road side garden

My goal is to SHOW you how to do things in our gardens and help you to put your garden to bed, gradually over the next month without a lot of worry or fuss. I really hope you can join me on this last Saturday morning walk, not only to learn, but also to celebrate another wonderful growing season as gardeners together. After this weekend we will be having all sorts of indoor events such as terrarium workshops, a succulent garden demonstration, an orchid workshop, and more. Details will be forthcoming in the next email.
Scare up some energy and ride your broom in this week here for some great bargains and some wicked good new plants and bulbs and garden gifts to inspire you. See you soon...

                                      Nancy

P.S. Rumor has it that a shipment of orchids is arriving at the end of this week. They will be boo-ti-ful!

Mini Garden

Look at what my staff did! They created a miniature garden in a broken clay pot. Too cool!
